Thrifty Thursday....Truly the Most Awesome Cookbook Ever

I found this at a resale shop on my way to Houston.  I don't know it's name and it's actually in Rosenberg, Texas on HWY 36 just off of HWY 59.  Anyway, it's a tiny little place with some crazy things.  Some wonderfully crazy things, like this booklet.  

It obviously came with a big ass can of Spry, which is apparently like Crisco.  Or, perhaps, one had to save the proof of purchase seals for a while to be able to send off for it.  Either way, it was worth it.  It has several stains and folded down corners- so you know it was a favorite.  

Please notice that the dude is talking about her "recipes" in his speech bubble, but she is talking about "receipts" in her speech bubble.  This typo occurs more than once.  I'm also a huge fan of the use of the apostrophe here- as in good-tastin' in place of good-tasting.  It's so ridiculous, I love it!

I love the crazy drawings and photos.  The man wears an especially insane smile on his face.

And it's so digestible!  Apparently, this was a huge selling point.  Their "hook," if you will.  Young, or old, or toothless.... everyone can eat it AND digest it!

Oops. I Forgot About Thrifty Thursday.

Well, actually I just plain didn't even think about what day it was for a few days.  I've been at school trying to set up my classroom- knee-deep in organizing and arranging and decorating.

 

So this is a vintage covered Pyrex dish I found at Thrift Town on Stassney, here in Austin.  I love the lemony color and the clean lines of this dish. 

 

It is not a perfect specimen.  It has many scratches and a chipped corner, but that must mean it was well loved.  And now it is well loved again.

Thrifty Thursday...Late

$7 for the set at Savers on South Lamar.  They're dirty and scratched up, but I still love them.  And hopefully, they'll clean up good with some Goo Gone or Goof Off.  

Thrifty Thursday....On a Saturday

I've had quite a lot of good luck at the thrift stores lately.  But I am only going to write about one find at a time.  Being the avid fan of alliteration that I am, I thought it would be cute to do it on Thursdays and call it "Thrifty Thursday."  Then I Googled "Thrifty Thursday" to see if I would be copying anyone and, of course, I would be.  But I decided I don't care.  It's the dorky teacher in me.  I can't pass up an opportunity for a catchy title, especially with alliteration.

This first, find came from our local Goodwill outlet.  It's actually called Goodwill Blue Hanger.  There are two of them.  One in North Austin that has housewares and accessories.  And one in East Austin that has clothing and linens.  They both have books, however, the books at the East location seemed to be in better condition.  These outlets are like the last chance for these items to be purchased before their final doom.  They are basically just warehouses with large tables or bins, piled with thrifty goodness.  Well, "goodness" is a bit of an exaggeration. Most of it is junk, and some of it might be wet or mildewed, but there are definitely treasures.

Like these commemorative Dr. Pepper bottles from 1977, 1978, and 1980. The '77 and '80 bottles are from Fiesta.   Fiesta is a very big festival in San Antonio.  Both bottles feature a fancy Carmen Miranda-type lady as, what I suppose was, the Fiesta logo for those years.

My favorite is the one in the middle.  It is from the Texas Folklife Festival in San Antonio in 1978.  I love the plain old label.

I also love the ribbing detail on all three of them.  

This is the best part.  The 1977 Fiesta bottle has a list of all the Fiesta queens from 1909 to 1976.  I love their old-fashioned names, like Nana and Mayme and Eugenia and Olive.  If I ever have a little girl, I'll be hard pressed to choose between the names Olive and Poppy.  

The 1980 Fiesta bottle has a list of all the Rey Feos (Ugly Kings) from 1947-1979. 

 So cute.  And just $1 each.  Go to Goodwill and see if there's an outlet in your city.  You never know what you might find.
